School libraries are a place of refuge for many LGBTQ students. Teacher-librarians can also play an important role in making sure students access the information they need, countering bullying, supporting students, and providing a space where students can be themselves. They can be leaders, educating and collaborating with colleagues to create a climate that celebrates diversity and inclusion.

Participants will:
– gain a stronger understanding of the challenges facing LGBTQ youth
-explore ways in which school libraries can provide a safe space for LGBTQ youth
-learn about resources for building a diverse collection of high quality LGBTQ books at elementary, middle and high school levels
– develop strategies for addressing possible concerns of parents and administration
