Antoine de Saint-Exupéry said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Becoming a library leader without a professional development (PD) plan is like that wish, we may want it, but are not sure how to achieve it.

A PD plan requires effort, thought and consideration. In this session both novice and experienced librarians will learn what a PD plan is, what its benefits are and the process to create one. We will lay the foundation and provide the tools necessary, the plan will probably have to be completed at home.

Specifically, attendees will be asked to think about their goals, discuss completing a personal assessment, encouraged to determine their skills and competencies, as well as areas for improvement and growth. There will be brainstorming about how do we develop the skills that we are missing and what non-traditional opportunities exist to develop skills. And finally, how to be accountable to yourself?

A discussion about leadership will frame the session, helping to focus everyone’s attention on becoming a library leader.

This session will be interactive, please come prepared to share your thoughts and ideas. And if you have some time, do your own Myers-Briggs test on one of the many free sites.
